Most people come back from Rome with hundreds of photos and almost none of themselves. One person is always behind the phone, the selfies are taken at arm's length, and the only full-length picture is the one a stranger took with your head cut off. That is the reason most of our clients book us: not for a wedding or a big occasion, but simply to be in the photos of their own trip.
Here is how hiring a photographer in Rome actually works, what it costs and how to get the most out of one hour.
Who books a holiday photographer in Rome?
- Couples on a honeymoon, an anniversary or their first trip together. See our couple photoshoots in Rome.
- Families who want one photo with everyone in it, for once. See family photoshoots.
- Solo travellers who want great portraits without asking strangers. See individual photoshoots.
- Friends travelling together for a birthday or a celebration.
Why a professional instead of the phone?
It is not only about the camera. A local photographer knows which corner of the square has the best light at 7 in the morning, where to stand so that nobody walks through the picture and how to make you relax in front of the lens. Most people say they are "not photogenic". In our experience, they are simply never shown what to do with their hands. A good part of every session is gentle direction: where to look, how to walk, when to laugh.
The secret: start at sunrise
If there is one piece of advice we give everyone, it is this. At sunrise the light is soft and warm, the air is cooler in summer and the famous places are almost empty. Imagine the Trevi Fountain with sparkling water and no crowd, the Spanish Steps glowing in morning light or the Pantheon square silent. An early session also leaves the rest of your day free for sightseeing.
If you really cannot get up early, the hour before sunset is the second-best option, with golden light but more people around.
How a session works, step by step
- Choose a package and a date. Booking takes two minutes on our booking page.
- We plan the route. Tell us the places you want, or let us suggest a route based on your style and where you are staying.
- We meet at the first location. The photographer guides you the whole time; there is nothing you need to prepare.
- You receive your photos. A set of unedited photos plus the best ones professionally edited, delivered in a few days depending on the package.
What does it cost?
Our sessions in Rome have fixed prices, so you know the total before you book. An individual or couple photoshoot starts from €120 for about an hour at 2 locations, with 80 unedited and 10 edited photos. Longer packages add more locations, more edited photos and extras like a Vespa or a vintage Fiat 500. You can compare everything on the pricing page.
Where we usually go
For a first visit, the classic route is the Colosseum at sunrise, then the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, or the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. If you prefer a calmer, more local feeling, Trastevere and the Aventine Hill are wonderful. For more ideas, see our 15 photoshoot ideas in Rome.
What to wear and bring
- Solid colours, nothing too busy. White, cream, red, emerald and navy look great against Rome's stone.
- Comfortable shoes for the walk between locations; bring the nicer pair in a bag.
- For longer sessions, a second outfit gives you two completely different sets of photos.
- Water in summer, a light layer in winter.
Sample routes by session length
One hour, the essentials. Trevi Fountain at sunrise, then a short walk to the Pantheon. Two iconic places, no rush, perfect for a first visit.
One and a half hours, the classic. Colosseum at sunrise, a walk past the Roman Forum viewpoint and a final stop at Piazza Venezia or the Monti neighbourhood.
Three hours, the full story. Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Trastevere, with time for an outfit change and a coffee break, and in the Gold packages a Vespa or a vintage Fiat 500.
What you actually receive
Every package includes two sets of photos: the unedited photos, selected so you have plenty of variety, and a set of professionally edited favourites with colour and light corrected by hand. Photos are delivered online in high resolution, ready to print, frame or share. Depending on the package, delivery takes between 2 and 5 days in Rome, so you often have them before you fly home.
How to choose a photographer in Rome
- Look at full galleries, not only the best five photos. You want consistency across a whole session.
- Check that prices are clear: duration, number of locations, number of edited photos and delivery time should be written before you book.
- Ask about direction. If you are not used to cameras, you need someone who guides you, not someone who waits for you to pose.
- Read reviews from people who travelled like you: couples, families or solo travellers.
- Make sure they know the light: a photographer who suggests sunrise is usually a good sign.
Combine your session with sightseeing
Because most of our sessions start at sunrise, you finish just as the city wakes up. A good plan is to end the session near where you want to spend the day: finish at the Colosseum and go straight into your timed ticket, or finish in Trastevere for a long breakfast. Our list of the 20 best things to do in Rome can help you plan the rest of the day.
Is it worth it?
We are obviously biased, but here is what clients tell us most often: the photos are the souvenir they actually look at. Magnets and postcards end up in a drawer; a good photo of the two of you at the Trevi Fountain ends up on the wall. One hour of your trip for something you will keep for decades is, in our opinion, a very good deal.
Common questions
Can we change the date if the weather is bad? Yes, let us know at least 24 hours before.
Do we get the unedited photos too? Yes, every package includes them, together with the edited ones.
We are not used to cameras. Is that a problem? Not at all. Most of our clients are not, and that is exactly what the photographer is there for.
Your time in Rome is short. One hour with a photographer gives you memories you will actually look at again. Have a look at all photoshoots in Rome, and if you are also visiting Venice, we work there too: photoshoots in Venice.
