Family Photoshoot in the Heart of Rome

How to plan a relaxed family photoshoot in Rome: places children enjoy, the best light and what to wear.

Family Photoshoot in the Heart of Rome

Rome is a surprisingly good city for children: big squares to run in, gelato on every corner, stories of gladiators and emperors that capture their imagination. It is also a city where, as a parent, you usually end up behind the camera and almost never in the picture. A family photoshoot changes that. This guide covers everything we tell parents before a session: where to go, when, what to wear and how to keep the little ones happy.

Why Rome works so well for families

  • Short distances, big backdrops. Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain are a few minutes' walk apart, so small legs do not get tired.
  • Green spaces. Villa Borghese has shade, open lawns, a small lake with rowing boats and room to run.
  • Quiet corners. Trastevere's lanes, the Aventine's Orange Garden and many small courtyards give you beautiful scenes away from the crowds.

The best time of day with children

Morning, almost always. Children are rested, the light is soft, the heat is manageable even in summer and the famous places are still quiet. If your little ones nap in the morning, the hour before sunset works too; we just keep the session shorter and finish before dinner.

Which package for your family?

Our family packages in Rome are sized by the number of people:

  • Standard, €150: 1 hour, 2 locations, for families of 3.
  • Premium, €250: 1.5 hours, 3 locations, for 4 to 5 people.
  • Gold, €450: 3 hours, 4 locations, for families of 6 or more, with a Vespa photoshoot included.

Every package is delivered in 2 days. All details are on the family photoshoot page.

A sample route

  1. Spanish Steps in the soft morning light, for a classic group portrait.
  2. Villa Borghese and the Pincio Terrace, where children can run, play and look over the city.
  3. A quiet street in Trastevere with warm, colourful walls, and a gelato as a reward at the end.

Older children love the Colosseum, of course. If that is on your list, start there at sunrise and let them pretend to be gladiators.

What to wear, without overthinking it

  • Coordinate, do not match. Soft neutrals with one accent colour look beautiful together.
  • Shoes first. Cobblestones are charming until feet hurt. Flats or trainers for everyone.
  • Layers. A cardigan or a light jacket adds texture and helps if the weather changes.
  • Avoid big logos and characters; they draw the eye away from faces.

How we work with children

We do not ask a three-year-old to stand still and smile. Instead, we play: races across the square, a twirl, throwing a coin, a piggyback ride. The posed group photo comes first, when everyone is fresh, and then we follow the children's energy. Short breaks are part of the plan, not a problem.

Practical tips from our sessions

  • Bring water, wipes and a small snack for quick resets.
  • Strollers are fine; we plan the route to avoid long staircases.
  • A favourite toy can work wonders with toddlers.
  • If it rains, you can move the session to another day with 24 hours' notice.

Tips by age

Babies (0 to 1 year). Plan the session right after a feed and a nap. Babies look wonderful in a parent's arms against simple backgrounds like a stone wall or a quiet doorway. A baby carrier is easier than a stroller between locations.

Toddlers (1 to 4 years). The most fun and the most unpredictable. We keep each location short, let them explore and capture the moments in between. A small bag of snacks is your best friend, and bubbles or a ball can save a session.

Children (5 to 10 years). Give them a role: let them choose a pose, lead the way to the next square or throw the coin into the Trevi Fountain. Children who feel involved smile for real.

Teenagers. They usually dread family photos. We keep their part relaxed and quick, and they often end up enjoying it. Let them choose their own outfit within your colour palette.

How to prepare your children

Tell them what is going to happen in simple words: "We are going on a walk with a photographer who will take pictures of us playing." Avoid "you have to smile". Promise a gelato at the end; it works every time, and the photos of the gelato are often the cutest of the session.

Best family spots in more detail

  • Piazza Navona: long, car-free and full of fountains. Children can run while we photograph from a distance.
  • Villa Borghese: shade in summer, lawns, a small lake with rowing boats and bike rental. Great for a longer, playful session.
  • The Pincio Terrace: a view over the whole city for a classic family portrait.
  • Trevi Fountain: magical for children, but only very early in the morning.
  • The Colosseum: perfect for older children who love history; again, early in the day.
  • Trastevere: colourful streets, slower pace and plenty of places for a snack stop.

Rome with children, season by season

In summer, plan sessions at sunrise; by mid-morning it can be too hot for little ones. Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild weather all day. In winter the light stays soft for longer and the city is calmer, but bring a warm layer for photos by the water fountains.

What happens after the session

You receive your photos in 2 days: all the selected unedited shots plus the professionally edited favourites, ready to print or share. Many families use them for a photo book or a holiday card, and some come back a few years later to photograph the children again in the same places.

Common questions from parents

What if my child cries or refuses? It happens, and it is fine. We take a break, play a little and try again. Some of the most loved photos come right after a meltdown, when everyone is laughing again.

Can grandparents join? Of course. Choose the package by the total number of people: Premium is for 4 to 5 and Gold for 6 or more.

Can we bring the stroller? Yes. We plan a route with as few staircases as possible.
